What we learned from the Naturopathic Doctor (part 2 of 2)

Before my husband went to the Naturopathic Doctor for his first consultation, he said he was going to a 'witch craft' doctor.  I know holistic medicine is a fairly new concept to many people in the western world.  In our society, we see an ad about a new medicine that promises to do this for you (with these side effects) every single day.  Then, when you do get the side effects from a prescribed drug, you can run back to your M.D. to get another prescription to help with the side effects.  And the vicious cycle goes on.

As defined by the free dictionary/medical dictionary, holistic medicine is a term used to describe therapies that attempt to treat the patient as a whole person.  Instead of treating an illness, as in orthodox allopathy, holistic medicine looks at an individual's overall physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional wellbeing before recommending treatment. A practitioner with a holistic approach treats the symptoms of illness as well as looking for the underlying cause of the illness. Holistic medicine also attempts to prevent illness by placing a greater emphasis on optimizing health. The body's systems are seen as interdependent parts of the person's whole being.

On this same site, it talks about the origins of holistic medicine.  The concept of holistic medicine is not new. In the 4th century B.C., Socrates warned that treating one part of the body only would not have good results. Hippocrates considered that many factors contribute to the health or otherwise of a human being, weather, nutrition, emotional factors, and in our time, a host of different sources of pollution can interfere with health. And of course, holistic medicine existed even before ancient Greece in some ancient healing traditions, such as those from India and China, which date back over 5,000 years. However, the term "holistic" only became part of everyday language in the 1970s, when Westerners began seeking an alternative to allopathic medicine.

Since my husband was not used to the term, 'holistic medicine', he thought the practice of it was 'witch craft.'  I am not entirely sure why he thought this as I went to massage therapy school and graduated in 2003.  I talked a lot about what I learned in school to him but apparently he forgot when I brought up seeing a Naturopathic Doctor.

After my husband's intital consultation at the N.D., he also went through muscle response testing.  He came home that day and told me the doctor could tell he had a lot of copper in his system.  She did not ask him what his profession was (an Industrial Electrician) before finding this information out.  He was astounded!  He no longer thought she was practicing 'witch craft!'  LOL!!!

She could also tell through MRT that he had a lot of chlorine in his system from our tap water and that he was also suffering from air pollutants.  She put him on a regime of nutritional supplements along with the alkalized ionized water.

My daughter was muscle tested and the N.D. found out that she had a lot of chlorine in her system, her digestion was imbalanced, she was having a hard time with processed grains and air pollutants.

My son had a dairy intolerance, his digestion is imbalanced (obviously with the dairy issue since dairy wreaks havoc on digestions and can cause a lot of inflammation) his body was also reacting to chlorine, processed grains, and air pollutants.  Remember from two posts ago that said my son was diagnosed with acid reflux as a newborn?  And he had 4 ear infections within 4 months and was on 4 rounds of antibiotics, each stronger than the one before, two winters ago?  Within 30 seconds of the Naturopathic Doctor doing muscle response testing on him, she said he had a dairy intolerance.  Well guess what?  The N.D. said that the acid reflux was a misdiagnosis and was really my son's body reacting to a dairy problem.  Had I known this information when he was a newborn, I could have cut out all dairy from my diet and would have probably had a much easier time nursing him.  The ear infections were also caused by the dairy.  Since seeing the naturopath and getting him off dairy, my son has not had one ear infection!

The N.D. put both kids on a regime of nutritional supplements along with the alkalized ionized water. That was really the beginning of me learning about how to take better care of our health through a holistic approach.
